This mountain was first ascended in 1953 through Kongma La along its North-ridge. Phokalde doesn't seem so significant if observed from Pheriche. It appears as a rocky ridge dominated by the vast bulk of Nuptse range. It is more interesting to see from Lobuche or Gorakshep.The northern side of the mountain holds hanging glacier. One should be very aware that the soil texture is very poor. However, it does offer some interesting scrambling on the well-defined ridges. The summit provides unique viewpoint of the mountain ranges.
